Finding Your Balance & Sports Authority $250 Gift Card Giveaway : (Ends 10/6)

As a mother one of my biggest problems is taking care of everyone’s needs and balancing those needs with my own. For the most part my children and family come first. However I am a firm believer that just because my children and family have needs does not mean that mine are not just as important. With school beginning and sports looming that just means less time for mom and more time shuffling kids to practice, games, and helping with homework. I have three children Buddy in high school, Nick in middle school, and Honey just started school and is in kindergarten. Though the older two are self sufficient when it comes to schooling that does not rule out their sports schedule.

Often my schedule consists of racing home form work to grab my daughter from aftercare. Rushing home to quickly run one of the boys to practice, and then hurrying back home to get some dinner into the rest of the family.  Then soon after run back to the field to pick up my son from practice. This usually happens three times a week. Saturday’s I have turned over to my children as we are usually trying to schedule in two sports games out in the hot Florida sun. That sun can really wear a person down.

So if I’m doing all of this how do I find time for myself? One of the things I use to enjoy was going to the gym. I enjoyed the uninterrupted hour or more of no yelling, fighting, or screams of “MOM!”. However I found that my time was limited and the money spent on the gym could be used elsewhere.  Maybe for sporting equipment, musical instruments for school, or just some good old family fun. For that reason a few years ago I cancelled my gym membership in exchange for working out at home. This “Find Your Balance” video from Sports Authority really resonated with me and gave weight to what I have been doing for the last couple of years.

When I first gave up my gym membership I felt that I was giving up on staying fit. It was a very emotional decision. However I found that the freedom of working out when and where I wanted really helped balance my fitness routine with the needs of my children and family.  At least once a week during one of those three days when I was running the children to practice I would throw my roller blades into the car and claim the day to be a “free for all” dinner night. (Which means you make your dinner because mom is giving that hour to herself.) I would take my daughter with me on her bike or in her push car and skate around the park in which my son was practicing.  Or with limited time in the morning I would get up and spend 15 minutes doing lunges, squats, or popping in my EA Fitness work out video. At one point I took up running and would run in the morning or on the days the boys didn’t have practice, that is until the 90 degree weather descended on South Florida.

The major purpose of this post is to encourage you to find your own balance. What works for you? How do you find the balance between being a supportive mother and taking care of your own needs? Sports Authority has some great “Find  Your Balance” videos that I’m sure will speak to you as well. Maybe yoga is your balance, or you enjoy running, the key is to find something that helps you stay centered and in control. Remember that the needs of your children and family must be in harmony with your own. If the scales are tipped in either direction it makes for chaos and on unhappy family all around.
