A recent trip to my favorite fast food joint left me shaking my head in disbelief. It seems every year something that was once free is no longer the case. In fact I know that a few fast food restaurants now charge you for dipping sauce if you don’t purchase chicken nuggets. However when I placed a recent order at Taco Bell I was surprised to see the item that popped up on the screen.
I always order my food special, not because I like being a pain but because I like it the way I like it. Not to mention if you order something special it is freshly made just for you and not something that has been sitting under the warmer. At Taco Bell I rarely get any items as they are listed on the menu. This is because a lot of stuff comes with tomatoes and I despise tomatoes.
I order my normal bean burrito. No red sauce, add lettuce and sour cream. This is where I was surprised. Now everyone knows when you order extra sour cream you are going to be charged. In fact if you order extra cheese, sour cream, or guacamole you can expect to be charged. But LETTUCE??? When did Taco Bell start charging for lettuce? Not only did they charge me but they charged me the same price as the sour cream .30 cents. I can’t imagine the pinch of lettuce they threw on my burrito was even a tenth of that, or cost the same amount as a tablespoon or two of sour cream.

Sadly you will still find me adding lettuce even for .30 cents, however maybe this is a good incentive to eat at home, and something like a BOWL of lettuce with some fat free dressing LOL!

I got a Seattle’s best iced coffee at Burger King. There was no indication on the menu or by the cashier that they were going to charge me for every component they asked if I wanted. It was excellent…but I ended up getting a surprise when the price was over three dollars!! Never again and I think I will be writing a complaint letter now.
Taco bell always messes up my special orders…You don’t know how many times I have said no onion and I have had to go back because they put onion…they should pay me for my gas to return the items that they made wrong
When I order fast food I always order it special made so it will be fresher. Taco Bell has gotten so expensive we rarely eat there anymore. Our favorite fast food has become the value menu at Arbys. I never thought the boys would like eating there but they love it and I know they slice the meat fresh when you order so you don’t have to worry about how long it has been sitting. Sandwiches is usually all we order out and whoever is at home is busy making fries so they are ready when we get home with the sandwiches.
I agree – You shouldn’t be charged so much for a pinch of lettuce
I’ve never been to Taco Bell but I totally believe it. We pay for a lot of stuff now that we used to get for free. I come from the nickel soda and ten cent coffee era so I have seen tremendous price rises in everything. When are they going to start charging us for the air we breathe?? Ridiculous!
That is a little ridiculous. Next we are going to be paying for toilet paper in public bathrooms.
I’ve started to get use to paying extra for Ranch but lettuce..come on???
I agree, TB should not have charged 30 cents for a pinch of lettuce when you specify no red sauce.
Wow..what a rip off!!! Taco Bell always seems inexpensive, but it’s really not!! But, I do love their burrito supremes and nachos! LOL
That’s ridiculous!…. Somehow it doesn’t surprise me though.
That was ridiculous! Nickle and dime us to death!

These days, fast food is no longer cheap – at least at Taco Bell and some other places we used to eat at. I’d much rather have the bowl of salad at home, too
Seems like fast food isn’t so cheap anymore. I probably would’ve stroked out right then and there if I saw I was being charged that much for so little lettuce.
I had a fast food story from the other day:
I don’t like all the extra fluff on my sandwiches and like to special order for the same reason you do. I went into Culver’s restaurant w/ a B1G1 free Deluxe burger sandwich coupon. I told them I wanted one normal and one just plain, nothing on it. I was told they don’t alter the Deluxe sandwich in any way. I HAD to take it with tomato and onion and pickle, even though I explained I knew I’d be charged regular price. I’ve never heard of not being able to take certain condiments off my burgers. I just took the pickle, tomato, and onion and threw them right in the trash. Their waste of food, not mine!
Oh Geez I can’t believe they wouldn’t let you get it WITHOUT it!
So far McDs doesn’t charge me extra when I ask for extra pickles on my hamburger, but I’ll watch out for it. BK started charging for extra lettuce a couple of years ago.
Why I avoid fast food joints….
I’ve got a better one for you: I went to Baskin Robbins and ordered a sundae, which they had on sale for 99 cents. I wanted just the ice cream, though, so I told them I didn’t want the toppings. I was told they couldn’t do that and I had to take the toppings to get the price. I tried to argue the logic until I finally asked for a manager. The manager explained the cashier was right. In the end I said to give me the toppings on the side, which they had to do in three separate cups, and I got my ice cream for 99 cents. What a pain! I can only imagine how much that actually cost the company!
Seriously at some point logic has got to take hold. I just don’t get why we would want to throw things away. I would almost want to take the three cups through them in their garbage and say now wasn’t that pointless!!
I actually did throw the cups in the garbage on my way out the door. I was too frustrated to trust myself to say anything else, though.
