December Means Christmas, Family, and Tradition

We finally put up the tree this weekend. I try each year to get it up during the Thanksgiving holiday. Until a couple years ago I always succeeded. Now it seems there is always something else that needs to be done. My husband put it together for me, I fluffed out the branches, and we set to decorating it. Our tree is starting to age and may be ready to retire soon. My husband saw a beautiful tree while shopping this weekend. I’m not quite ready for the splurge but maybe I will get lucky after the holidays.

One of my family Christmas traditions is ornaments. When I was a little girl my grandmother would buy my sister and I an ornament each year. When she passed away my father stepped in and bought us one to carry it on. When I was pregnant with my first child I told my mother I really hoped she would continue the tradition and purchase an ornament for my own children. I had no doubt that my mother would carry on the tradition. So each year my children receive an ornament from their grandmother. We mark each ornament with a letter (child’s name) and the year. When they leave our house and have their own Christmas they will have a set of ornaments to adorn their tree. My Christmas tree has all the ornaments my grandmother gave me dating all the way back to the 1970’s.

Here are a few of my favorite ornaments. You can tell the ones from my grandmother the wooden girls on the swing (my all time favorite) and the birdhouse (that needs a little repair). The Santa playing Trivial Pursuit was given to me by my mother, it is one of my favorite games. Others are ornaments as a memorial to my father and stepfather who passed in 2008 and 2005 (respectively). I have several ornaments throughout the tree that mean something. So each year as we break open the boxes and decorate the tree each tiny ornament holds so many memories. It is one of my favorite times of the year.

Do you have any holiday traditions? Traditions you hope to pass down to your own children?

  1. Your tree is beautiful! We always try to get ours set up the day after Thanksgiving and so far we have. But I understand about being busy!

  2. I usually like to have my tree up by Thanksgiving, but this year I put it up ON Thanksgiving. I’m kind of obsessed with ornaments. The memories…. Your tree is lovely!

  3. I love that squirrel bird feeder ornament so cute! When I was little we would go visit Eggbert at Christmas time. Then they sold him or there was a fire or something happened. Well the original place last year started having him again… and so last year and this year we took the kids to go see Eggbert. It makes my little girl heart happy too. :)
