Our Mission: To surprise someone or someplace with a fun and special gift basket.
Preparation: A trip to our local Walmart for some yummy Mars snacks and a basket.
Final Destination: Publix
Last weekend Honey and I took some time out of our weekend to shop for a special gift for an unexpecting person. Bare with me as I take you through a little history. Any time Honey and I go to Publix, which is often a couple times a week, she always ask if we can see if “the girl” is there. “The girl”, as Honey use to refer to her, is the cook that makes and serves the yummy samples at our local Publix.
We visit often and talk to her so much that she often recognizes us and knows why we are there. Honey LOVES the samples that she cooks and she is one of her best customers. Honey prefers when she cooks with mushrooms and often bypasses the dessert. This year when Honey started Kindergarten guess who I bumped into at school? It turns out that she volunteers at the school a couple days of week in the cafeteria. Not only that but she is the volunteer head of our PTO and a room mom, all while still working. Talk about a super mom!
Honey and I felt that “Syvia” she is no longer “that girl” deserved a little surprise for all the time she puts into our school, and for the yummy food she cooks! We headed down to our local Walmart to pick up some goodies and a gift basket. When it came to our basket we decided we wanted to go with a Halloween theme and Honey picked out a black bucket with cute little candy corn adorning it. We picked out some cute tissue paper. That was the easy part, next we needed to select some candy. The reason this was not so easy was there was TOO much candy to chose from. Every corner you turned in the store there were boxes and isles of candy. There was candy down the isle on either side of us coming in. There were isles of candy in the back of the store. There was candy in the Halloween isle and if that wasn’t enough the entire isle in front of the check out lanes had box after box of candy.
I really thought this mission was a great opportunity to show my daughter that it is good to give, just to give. There was no special occasion, no birthday or holiday. We were just doing something nice for someone that didn’t expect it. Often we find ourselves doing this around the holidays with the Tots for Toys or sometimes I participate in an Adopt a Family through work, but the holidays are not the only time to be charitable or giveback.
Honey and I selected our candy it was a hard choice between the Snickers mini candies, M&M’s, Twix, and other yummy candies. Snickers has always been a favorite of mine and Honey was leaning towards the M&M’s. So we ended up getting a bag of peanut M&M’s, Snickers Mini’s, and a large Halloween Harvest bag filled with tons of Mars candy bars, as well as a few other things.
Honey was eager to get to work on our basket and head over to Publix. So after we got home from Walmart we put together our basket.
After that we headed to Publix hoping that Syvia was there. We are never really sure when she is there though we look for her every time we visit. We lucked out and she was there so we ran back out to the car to get our basket. The excitement in Honey’s eyes was so contagious and I had to swallow a lump in my throat just watching her. The minute we stepped back into Publix however Honey put on the brakes. She is very shy with people she doesn’t really know so I had to take over the basket and she walked with me.
We gave Syvia the basket and explained what we were doing. She was BEYOND surprised and excited. Her exact words were “I have the chills”. She said she was so excited that she had the chills, she just couldn’t believe we had done something so nice. It was then that we learned more about her additional volunteer work beyond the cafeteria at the school and her actual name.
Despite Honey’s shyness she was so excited the rest of the day and happy that “the girl” finally had a name “Syvia”.
