Hershey Kisses and a Little Understanding

First Day of Kindergarten Poem

Monday was my nephews first day of kindergarten. (My daughter doesn’t start until Wednesday.) He was super excited and while my sister was equally excited for him like all parents shipping their children off to school for the first time it can be quite an emotional occasion. They walked down the hall to his room with him leading the way. The teacher gave her a smile and helped get my nephew situated. She handed my sister a little Hershey kiss and a note and sent her on her way.  I found this first day of kindergarten poem in the note one of the sweetest things I had ever seen from a teacher. A poem like this would make me feel that my child is in wonderful hands.

First Day of Kindergarten

I gave you a little wink and smile
as you entered my room today.
For I know how hard it is to leave
and know your child must stay.

You’ve been with him for five years now
and have been a loving guide,
But now, alas, the time has come
to leave him at my side.

Just know that as you drive away
and tears down your cheeks may flow
I’ll love him as I would my own
and help him learn and grow.

So please put your mind at ease
and cry those tears no more
For I will love him and take him in
when you leave him at my door.

Glad to read this today, so I can get the tears out now, instead of in 2 weeks when my daughter goes to kindergarten. sniff, sniff.

How awesome is it that the teachers take the time to assure you that your precious one will be ok and that they understand how hard it is to let them go into the world without you.

  3. That is such a sweet and thoughtful thing to do. What a wonderful teacher to take the time to help ease this hard transition. My son is only 3 1/2, but it made me cry to think that day will come for me!
