Today marks the start of the 2012 Olympic Games in London! Are you excited? Will you be watching? I remember when the 2012 Olympic Games use to be every 4 years with summer and winter taking place in the same year. Then in 1992 the decision was made to hold the summer and winter Olympic Games separately and each one began a 4 year cycle, placing them two years apart. In 1992 we watched the winter Olympics and then again in 1994 in order to get on the new 4 year – 2 year cycle.
As a child I always preferred watching the gymnastics portion of the Olympic Games. I’m sure this had to do with always wishing I could do a darn back hand spring! I don’t have any specific memories of watching it. I just know when I do I have a since of pride for our country and love to watch the participates perform or race to the finish. My parents were lucky enough to have the chance to attend the 1996 Summer Olympic Games while living in Atlanta, Georgia.
It just so happens that the 1996 Summer Olympic Games is what sparkedinterest in becoming an Olympic athlete. He describes the moment well, Kerri Strugs going up for a vault. I think quite a lot of us can remember that Olympics. David answered in my interview, “It is such an honor to be able to represent the United States at the Olympic Games and to wear the red, white and blue.” He also mentions in this short video about the feeling of walking into the opening ceremonies with USA on his back. He sounds like a guy proud to represent the USA and someone who takes pride in his sport of diving.
My kids are getting old enough to enjoy the Olympic Games and begin to make their own memories. I have to say knowing my boys, and despite living in South Florida I think they would prefer the winter Olympic Games with the snow boards, skis, and jumps. Will you be watching the 2012 Olympic Games today.
