The winter Olympics are just around in the corner. My boys love the winter Olympics because the snowboarding, bobsledding, and ski jumping. My daughter and I of course prefer the ice skating. I’ve always loved to watch ice skaters and one of my favorite movies is The Cutting Edge.
For the first time ever, the 2014 Winter Olympics will kick-off February 6th on NBC, one night before the opening ceremonies, featuring new Olympic sport Snowboard Slopestyle! You can link to http://www.nbcolympics.com/. Snowboard Slopestyle is exactly what my boys love to watch!
Slopestyle is a type of winter sporting event where the goal is to perform the most difficult tricks while getting the highest amplitude off of jumps, with an emphasis on performing different types of tricks instead of doing one great trick repeatedly.
As many of you know we reside in South Florida. This means while others are dealing with freezing rain, inches upon inches of snow, and below zero temps right now we are enjoying are most beautiful weather. There will be no snowball fights or making of snow angels. In fact here is a quick glimpse of what it was like today (January 5, 2014).
With no snow to be seen we decided we were going to have to get in the “winter” spirit the Florida way, by enjoying the good weather outdoors. I think Floridians enjoy winter more than northerners, it is the time of the year when the humidity is low and breeze comes in off the ocean. With such beautiful weather how can you not take advantage of the outdoors.
I asked Honey when she thinks of winter what does she think of? Her answer was snow and snowmen so before our fun event Honey wanted to do a craft. It just so happened that being right after the holidays I was able to pick up for pennies a fun Snow Globe Plate kit. We made the cutest plates (that we used as decorations) for our Winter themed party.
We made up some kool-aid and enjoyed a day of outside activity our own Olympics if you will. In place of ice skating we did some roller-blading. In place of a snowball fight we decided to throw horseshoes (but not at each other of course). We enjoyed a fun game of Olympic ring toss and at the end of our fun day of friendly competition everyone was relaxed and smiling.
Each Olympic experience is unique and I encourage you to enjoy the festivities with your own family. Pinterest has some wonderful ideas from cake baking, craft making, and other fun things to create an Olympic Family Outing of your own.
