As bloggers we all measure our success in different ways. Some of us are happy to blog for our family and friends. Some started their blog as a journal to their children, or a way to stay in touch with families that are far away. Other bloggers have taken their blog and made it a place to host giveaways and post product reviews a mist their personal and entertaining family post. Others have gone a step farther and turned their blog into a way to make a little extra cash. Others still are making a living off of their blog.
No matter what you blog for many bloggers use web traffic analysis tools to see where our traffic comes from, what post are getting the most views, and how many people are coming to visit each day. There are many such platforms that offer such a service. I have found the two free analytic systems that are used most often are Google Analytics and Stat Counter. Both of these track a large amount of information about your traffic as long as you have placed a snippet of code on your blog. I myself visit both of these several times a day and have gotten ideas regarding post just from seeing what people are searching for and landing on my blog.
Since a blog is a small and personal thing often our biggest decision is whether to use Blogger or WordPress. Thankfully we don’t need big tools like a content management system which is something you may need should you get to say….. Huffington Post status. Truthfully if I ever got to that status I would just have someone else doing all the technical stuff for me anyway. So I mentioned Blogger vs WordPress. This is the battle of the decade. You will find die hard fans of both platforms. The truth is which ever platform makes you happy is the platform you need. A blogger who is simply creating a journal for friends and family definitely doesn’t need all the bells and whistles that WordPress has. A blogger that is trying to grow their blog and eventually have it be a money maker would definitely benefit from those bells and whistles but many of the same things can be accomplished on Blogger just not with as much ease.
Another word I recently came upon was marketing automation. I tried to google this term to see if I could get a handle on it and truthfully I think I landed in the spin zone. However the thought of automating your marketing efforts sounds appealing to me LOL. Sometimes I wish I had a little helper to do all of the things I fall behind on daily. Then I would have the opportunity to spend my time writing for Shibley Smiles and spend some time reading some of the other wonderful blogs that I come across daily in this little part of our world.
