What do you blog about? How did you start blogging? Why did you start blogging? These are often the questions that I am asked when I say, “I am a blogger”. The reasons I blog now are not the same as when I started. Introduced to blogging by a friend, LeeAnn from The Life of Rylie…and Bryce, too! I started blogging because I enjoy graphic design. I spent a couple weeks pouring myself into the design of my blog and I found that it helped to have a creative outlet. I’ve always enjoyed some time of creativity in my life.
When I was young I enjoyed drawing, especially cartoon characters, my favorite was and still is Garfield. As I grew older I drew less and began making fun t-shirts and onesis for my family and friends using puffy paints and appliqués. Once I had children I started sewing Halloween costumes and writing fun letters to my family from the view point of my children. As the computer age emerged so did my love of them. My creativity soon became digital scrapbooking. I found I was not satisfied with using others designs and decided to teach myself how to create my own designs.
My first obstacle when I decided I wanted to do my own designing was researching photo editing programs. I had never really used anything more then paint which comes with Windows and is as basic as one could get. After a stint with Corel Paint I ended up selecting Photoshop CS2 as my graphic design and photo editor. I still use it today to create my blog designs. Which brings us back to the topic “Why did you start blogging?” One unique feature at Shibley Smiles is my ever changing blogging landscape. I didn’t realize how many readers enjoyed my change of designs until one month I didn’t change it on my normal schedule. In March of 2011 I switched from Blogger to WordPress and in doing so I had to hold off on changing my design until the second week of March. I got many comments from my readers asking where my new design was, that they had visited just to see what it was. I was amazed that so many people cared and enjoyed this fun feature. After debating on whether changing a blog design often was good for branding and marketing purposes those few comments gave me the green light to continue to do so.
This I believe is what makes Shibley Smiles fun and unique. My current design (palm trees and surfboards depending on when you are reading this post) is by far one of my favorites. I’m sure it has to do with my love of the beach and all things tropical. One of these days I am going to visit a tropical island , stay in a beach cabana and sip Mojitos in the sun (if any resorts wish to pitch me for this opportunity my email is wide open). I’m struggling with the thought of changing it in September and because of that my bloggy inspiration eludes me. I’ve considered doing a football theme but wasn’t sure if my readers were “football people”.
So I thought why not ask you, my loyal readers? Do you have any suggestions as to what would be a good theme here at Shibley Smiles for September? What would you like to see? Send me your creative juices and vibes below.
If you aren’t creative then tell me “Why do you blog?” or “How did you start?”
