It is the time a year when we eat lots of food, go to parties and celebrate. We dig deep into the attic or garage and pull out all those bins of decorations and clear off everyday decor for our holiday decorations.
This to me is what makes the holidays so special. I love decorating but decorating for the holidays is my favorite part of Christmas. Some don’t bother, they say it is to much work for such a short time. Me ,I give it all I have and my house normally looks like a Christmas wonderland.
I love the garland and lights all over the house, along with my collection of Santa’s , but my all time favorite is decorating the tree. Each year I flip open the top of the bin containing my tree ornaments and a flood of memories come rolling back. Besides a few colored glass balls most of my ornaments hold special memories like from when my girls were little or a trip to the Bahama’s.
In hopes that my children and grandchildren would have the same experience each Christmas a tradition was started by the girls grandmother that I have carried on to my own grandchildren.
Every year a unique Christmas ornament is given to each child from their first Christmas till they are 18. The ornament is specific to them. Sometimes it is an ornament of the sport they played that year, or something they are interested in. I have bought my oldest grandson, Christopher, ornaments that range from baby’s first Christmas, a soccer ball, to a Heinz ketchup ornament ( he puts ketchup on everything). Last year, Honey, got a beautiful shoe because if you read Shibley Smiles you know that Honey loves her shoes.
Holidays and Traditions
When they grow up and have a tree of their own they will have 18 ornaments to decorate with. As they decorate their trees in years to come each ornament will bring back a specific memory of a time in their life and hopefully memories of me, their grandmother. I can see them now decorating the tree with their children telling them stories about each ornament.
Oh, and let me tell you this, one of the absolute best stores to find unique ornaments is Hallmark. To make it even better there is a Hallmark coupon for the holidays saving you $5.00 on your purchase of $10.00 or more.
Hoping you all have a very Happy Holiday season with many fond memories.
