As a mother of three children I can attest to the fact that getting kids to read over the summer is like trying to pound a square peg into a round hole, it is nearly impossible. At least that use to be the case with my oldest son, until he found books that he enjoys reading. This is the key to getting your children to read.
For him these books came in a series by Rick Riordan. Based on Greek mythology thePercy Jacksonseries is a popular series amoung tweens.
Though this particular series has come to an end Rick Riordan realized the impact he has had on young adults and has already begun two more series that my son is also reading. He is currently reading the book The Thorn of Fire which is the 2nd book in the Kane Chronicles based on Egyptian mythology. We have in the past belonged to the Children’s Book of the Month club and would pre-order the newest book months before it was released.
My youngest son is not much of a book reader but we have found if we can find books related to things he is interested in such as sports we have an easier time getting him to sit down and read. Currently he is required to read a book over the summer and must take a reading test during his first week of middle school.
My daughter loves to have books read to her and I’m hoping like me once she learns how to read she will enjoy it as much as I did as a little girl. I remember reading The Little House on the Prairie books and was a big fan of the Sweet Valley High series. My grandmother would send me copies for my birthday, Christmas, and other special holidays. These days I don’t spend that much time reading an actual book however I always have an audio book queued up in my iPod.
