We all know some things can make your home look more inviting to a thief. Bad lighting, for one, or overgrown grass and newspapers piling up on the front lawn when you are on a trip. One of the bloggers I follow has posted an interesting infographic the Home Security Store developed on burglary statistics, and it’s a real eye opener. In America, the South has more burglaries than other regions, with Houston being the city with the very highest burglary rate. 73% of all burglaries are residential burglaries, with only 27% being commercial, making home alarm systems increasingly important for home owners in order to protect yourself, your family and your property.
The most common times of day for burglaries, contrary to popular belief, is actually not late at night, but during the late morning and early afternoon when people are most likely to be out at work or shopping. However, the Home Security Store make it very clear with their statistics that you are three times more likely to get burgled if you do not have a security alarm system. So installing an alarm system can reduce the chance that your property will be targeted.
Penelope’s Oasis, a website that covers a whole medley of different topics from marriage to security, are sharing the campaign to help keep your family and home safe from burglars by taking the simple preventative steps. These steps can be simple, such as having good lighting around your home and making sure that your home always looks occupied, but they can make a huge difference as to how appealing your home is to a potential burglar.
Many burglaries are opportunist in nature, which means that if your home happens to look vulnerable at any given time, then an opportunistic thief may just take the chance. By making your house look as unappealing to burgle as possible, you drastically reduce your chances of being a victim of burglary. Something as simple as fitting an alarm system can be enough to stop a burglar even contemplating trying to access your home but in worse cases where it does not prevent them, it can help alert help and the authorities and increases your overall protection.

Thanks for all of the info. How interesting about the time that burglary happens.

My husband and I used to watch a tv show that would show you the best ways robbers got into your home and what they were most likely to take and the fact that your ‘hiding’ spots were not good spots. We live in a very small town and can usually leave our doors unlocked, but with new neighbors we’ve been locking up tight all the time and even make sure to put a bar in the lifters of the garage door so it cannot be opened. Most people think their automatic garage door locks, but most of them you can go right up and lift it with your hand.

Interesting that most happen during broad daylight.
We have an alarm and a large dog. Hopefully those will help!
