Teaching kids the proper ways on how to foster the environment can be fun but not always easy. Most kids would rather just play and be “kids” than to actually pay attention. But, just because getting your kid’s attention is a bit of a hard work means that there is no way to get them involved. To teach kids little ways on how to care for the environment can be beneficial for them. Even though the future of our environment does not entirely lie on the young ones’ shoulders, they can still be a really great ally to make our planet greener and safer. And as a mother, there is nothing in this world that I ever wanted more than to have the assurance that my kid is living in a healthy and sanitary environment.
I’ve thought of some ways that can help your get your kids’ attention and let them become environmentally aware:
Be the best example: Kids look up to grown-ups as their role models. And as a grown-up, the best thing that you can do is to be a GOOD role model for them. Show them that you care for the environment. Practice deeds that will encourage them to do the same such as recycling, planting plants and trees, conserving water and energy, and turning off the appliances when not in use. These little ways will grow on them and they will carry it with them as they grow old.
Maddie and Matt’s Happy Earth: Maddie and Matt’s Happy Earth is a free kid application from AppLabs Digital Studios Inc. which teaches kids ways on how to nurture the environment. Using this platform is an effective way to infuse knowledge to kids seeing that most kids today are so immersed in using modern devices.
Maddie and Matt’s Happy Earth features 20 scenarios that tells kids do’s and don’t’s when it comes to environmental conservation. The kid app features Earth Facts which tells numerical and historical stats about our planet. The free kiddie app also features three games that will certainly get your kids hooked while still letting them learn new information about caring for Mother Earth. One of the games is called Segregame. In Segregame, your kids can learn where and how to properly dispose and segregate their trash. Another game is called Create Your Own Happy Earth. In this game, kids will have the power to create their own visions of Happy Earth using the variety of eyes and smileys on the options. With boatloads of information and the wit of Maddie and Matt, your kids will surely acquire lots of easy, Earth-friendly steps in Maddie and Matt’s Happy Earth!
Outdoor activities: Take your kids somewhere and show them the beauty of nature. There are a lot of simple ways that can lure your kids to be environmental kiddies. Go to the beach. Go camping or hiking with them. Visit the zoo. Let them see the wilderness and they will be able to appreciate the wonder that is in front of them. This way, they will be encouraged to protect our planet and restore the natural beauty that it has.
Segregation: This is an effective way to help make your kids go green. Through segregation, they will be able to determine where to properly dispose their trash. What I do with my kids is this, every time we do a general house cleaning, I tell them to dispose each trash into the proper waste bin. The one who gets most things correct will get a prize from me. And it’s really effective because they are keener now on throwing their garbage into the correct trash bin. And what’s wonderful is that, even without my supervision, they still make sure that their trash is disposed correctly.
Watch eco-friendly movies with them: Kids love animation. And if the movies that they see hold a special and relevant message, they will likely apply it to their lives and their routine. Watch movies with them that has special meanings and messages to help them be invested. Let them see movies like Over the Hedge, The Lorax, and Wall-E, and have an ecological discussion with them after watching the movie. It doesn’t hurt to have a movie marathon with your kids every weekend. This is a good way to get your kids’ attention, and also a nice way of family bonding.
There are tons of ways to make your kids care about our environment. With proper training, guidance and discipline, your kids will surely be on their ways to go green!
