I’ll admit since I currently have insurance through work I don’t often comparison shop when it comes to my pharmacy needs. However there have been times when a medicine I need is not covered and I end up paying full price, or if I’m lucky I have a discount coupon. As I’m paying the pharmacist I always wonder if I could have gotten my item cheaper some where else. I am a HUGE comparison shopper and rarely do I purchase something on whim. However when it comes to medicine you usually need/want it NOW and don’t have the time or want to deal with the hassle of comparison shopping. Now you can do just that without leaving your home or even as you are leaving your doctors office with the Free LowestMed Smartphone App.
LowestMed is the first free mobile app in the industry to provide consumers with the ability to view and compare prescription drug prices at leading supermarket and pharmacy chains in their neighborhood. It available on iPhone, Android or Windows phone devices. LowestMed offers free and confidential pharmacy savings in the palm of your hand for those on company plans and individual plans under the ACA, as well as those who choose not to buy health insurance.
I downloaded the app to give it a try because it says: The LowestMed app is as simple as typing your prescription into your smartphone. Customers do not need to enter any personal information and LowestMed does not track prescriptions. For more information about the benefits of LowestMed and directions to the app, visit www.lowestmed.com/free. So let’s see how simple it is!
As soon as I opened the app it was ready for me to start searching. I didn’t have to create a profile or put in any information. I decided to choose a medicine I purchase often for my son.
I could either enter in my location or allow it to find my location. This is definitely a good option to have. Usually my phone is good about finding my current location but occasionally it thinks I’m in Georgia. Once I put in my medicine and clicked search I was taken to several different strengths of the medicine to choose from.
Once I selected my strength I was given a list of places I could purchase the medicine and the price at each location.
Since the medicine I chose is not an expensive medicine the prices are not a huge savings but you can see the different prices at each location. I went ahead and priced out a different medicine that we purchase on a monthly basis as if I did not have insurance and you can see some larger savings.
The last step is to show your discount card to get the prices. What you don’t have a discount card? Not to worry we are talking a virtual card here. Simply select the green button labeled discount card and you will be given information to give to the pharmacist to receive your discount price.
The verdict? This app was super simple to use and definitely worth having in your pocket when you need to come out-of-pocket for your pharmaceutical needs.
How much can I save using the discount codes?
Using LowestMed’s discount codes will generally result in a savings of 10 to 85 percent off retail prices
After trying out this app I have to say I’m a little curious as to how it would work with insurance. I say this because the Albuterol I priced above appears to be cheaper than the normal copay I pay. However to be fair I may be getting a larger quantity. I searched the FAQ on their site and found this.
If I have insurance, how can I use LowestMed?
If you have insurance, your prices may be different from those shown on this app. Sometimes our discount codes will result in better prices than your insurance copayment. Simply ask the pharmacist to check the price using your insurance and the LowestMed discount codes to see which one is best for your purchase.
I encourage you to not only download the app but to check out the LowestMed Blog for some interesting articles.
I received the above products or was compensated for this post.
