I was recently invited to try out a new iPhone application called Moby. Moby is a private location sharing service for you, and the people that matter to you. I could definitely see the use in this application between parents in their child. That is if the children have a supported device such as an iPhone, Blackberry, and soon coming to Android.
With this free application you have several features that I can see being used in different ways. The Share Location feature allows you to share with your friends in family where you are and how long you tend to be there. I can see this coming in handy when trying to meet up with friends. By sharing your location with them they will be able to see a map and your Moby icon and the time frame you plan to be there.
However as a parent what I feel this application would be most useful for is having your children check in with you. Unfortunately my children do not have a supported device so this is not something that will work currently for our family. I like that you can send a Check In request to your Moby friends. So I could request that my son check in with me. When he does I will see where exactly he is. No telling me his at one place when he is actually somewhere entirely different.
As much as this sounds like a fun application I also believe it is an application that has to be used with caution if you are introducing this to your children. What I would love to see with this application is some possible parent controls if this application is downloaded to a child’s phone. As a parent I would like to have authority over who my child is adding as a “Moby” friend. That said I believe the application is intending for older family members, however as I said I could definitely see the use of it with younger children as well.
Here is a great video that shows you exactly how to use each core feature.
Benefits for families:
- Instantly know where your family members are without having to interrupt them with a phone call or text message
- Keep coordinated when you’re at the mall, at an amusement park, or on vacation
- Know if a family member is stuck at the office, running late, or on their way home
- In case of emergency, family members can instantly alert each other that they need help
- Keep your privacy protected by knowing that your location is only shared with the people you choose
