Right in our front yard! Everyone pretty much knew Tropical Storm Isaac was going to stay west of South Florida and enter the Gulf of Mexico. We expected to get some rain and wind but were not prepared with what Isaac left us. We went to bed Sunday evening learning that schools were to stay open as the weather was expected to get better by morning. By the time I woke up after a fitful sleep full of rumbling thunder we found out schools had been closed.
I thought the worse was behind us as it poured and stormed the entire night. I woke up every 45 minutes because I was worried the thunder was signifying a tornado (I can handle a hurricane I can’t handle a tornado). The rain was light and the wind was showing its presence as I took off for work. While I was at work it did nothing but rain the entire day at home. I was greeted when I returned home to a pool in my yard, children boogie boarding in the street, and family’s taking a boat ride (yes a boat ride).

That’s crazy! I hope it’s gone down today.

Yep there is some standing water in driveways and lawns but overall in our area it has gone back down and no rain today. 8 schools are closed again on Wed due to flooding roads just a little further west (and country area) so less drainage available.

Oh no! I’m glad everyone is safe. I do not miss this at all. We lived in the Port Charlotte area for 6 years. The flooding is crazy.
Colleen says
Thanks and this is really my first “flooding” I’ve dealt with even with 4 Hurricanes, but maybe it is the area. It is just so odd because we are East Coast but I guess that is the bad side of a storm I’ve heard.

I remember playing in water like this as a child in Pensacola. Good times, good memories

I only went through one Hurricane that I remember when I was young I’ve been through more as an adult.

Oh wow!! I hope it doesn’t get much higher.

It is all gone now but I had my son sending me photos during the day because he kept saying it is getting worse and I was getting nervous but it never made it up all the way to the house thankfully.

Thanks for sharing the pics. That is a lot of water. Hope your home stayed safe.
Colleen says
It did thank you, it stayed outside.

Love the pictures we are in North Miami Beach and had a lot of rain and wind (tornado warning) . I am so glad to see that I am not the only Mom who let her kids play in the water. My daughter was jumping on the trampoline trying to “FLY” away. The price we pay for living in PARADISE…

It is a small price to pay as long as the tornados stay away those scare the you know what out of me!!

OMG that is crazy, your daughter is adorable, all proud of the pool of rain! The boat, simply crazy! Glad your safe.
Colleen says
Thank you on all accounts. My daughter was laughing she had such a good time. I wish I could have captured that more, it was tough to do too much it was still raining a little and I was trying to keep my camera covered.
When I turned down the road the first thing I saw was the family in the boat and had to try to take a pic. It wasn’t a great pic because I was driving and had to concentrate obviously on THAT first and not stalling.

I’m glad your house isn’t flooded.

I always thought it is such a shame that we can’t take water from places that have too much water and give it to the drought areas.
Colleen says
Really that would be great, the reason we had such an issue in our area is we have canals and they began to overflow.
Megan says
That is nuts! I hope your house, car, and family are OK!
Colleen says
Yep we all made it through ok, thankfully. There were some fatalities due to accidents in our area and even some reports of totally submerged cars that veered off into the grass instead of the road.
Eileen says
OH my gosh Colleen, that is shocking! I sure hope your house stayed dry, after having water in our basement and mold issues we had to replace carpets here. Expensive!
Gotta’ admit though, this looks fun for the kids and they will never forget it. So nice you collected some snapshots.
My daughter was watching the storm closely, she is hoping to have a beach wedding in the panhandle area in 2014 and so worried it would hit there…we know it takes years to clean up and so much devastation. So glad you are all safe!

I was most worried about getting home to my kids because it occurred when I was at work and they were home. I honestly would never have driven down the road to my house but my husband told me too. Thankfully no issues there and got their safely. It is just so odd to see it so I had to take photos.

I learned my lesson on that Colleen. Many years ago I rushed home to beat a storm with the 3 kids, and the street flooded. I thought well, I HAVE to keep going I was only a few blocks from home. But I drove into about 2 1/2 feet of water, totally misjudging the depth. The car stalled immediately and started coming in the bottom of the doors. It all of a sudden was like the wrath of GOD storming and we couldnt even see a foot ahead of us. We scrambled out and was motioned into a house nearby by some people my sister knew. My youngest was just a bitty thing and she lost her flip flops and they went floating away. She was so upset. You’d think a thing like this would be OK but the flooding happened so fast it was almost coming in like one big WHOOSH. Umm…It was our insurance agent that told us NEVER to drive into standing water, cuz you never can judge depth or how fast it can change. It ruined our car and even though insurance paid to “fix” it, that smell never came out of the carpets and it never did run completely right again. We know another family whose son drove into a small flooded road at the bottom of a hill and he lost control and the car overturned and he died. So this whole thing scares me. But, we do still laugh about the panic of the lost flip flops and dragging 3 soaking wet kids into virtually a stranger’s house that day.
Colleen says
I would have never done it but my husband said I would be fine and he knows cars but I still worry that it could have done something to my car. I hope not.
Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell says
Oh geez! It’s not seeping into the homes?
Colleen says
Not ours, I’m sure so people had issues. We do have water in the garage but not a lot.
Donna says
Well the kids are making the best of it, at least. 🙂
Colleen says
Yeah what good is it to have all that water without a little fun.
Rhiannon Rowland says
Wow, amazing photos! We lost our home to flooding about 4 years ago, after several inches of rain melted the foot of snow that had built up over a couple weeks. Between the rain and the melting our river came up higher than anyone had seen in about 80 years, they called it a Hundred Year Flood. We lost most everything we owned and had to have our house condemned, our house was only 3 away from the river. We now live on the higher side of the river and a couple blocks away…no flooding here during that flood, we asked. That didn’t look too bad though and looks like all the kids had an amazing time playing. ( sorry long winded 😉 )
