I’m going to be honest, I am an Apple girl and have been using Apple products at home and for my personal business. I am not at all familiar with Android products. This fact makes this review even more valid, with no previous experience all that you read here is by a brand new user who is unfamiliar with the Nextbook brand. The Nextbook Premium 9 was released over the holiday season and one of the newest products from eFun. The Nextbook Premium 9 is equipped with the all important Wi-Fi and comes with the Android 2.3 OS. True to it’s name it boast a large 9″ display.

Your new Premium9 comes equipped with new android 2.3 OS, you can surf the net, play games, or stream videos smoother than ever! With one touch, you can open your favorite book and enjoy it anywhere. The new Next9P comes with build-in camera to capture and share those treasured moments. If it’s games that you prefer, there are thousands of free 3rd party apps available for you to download. Premium9, it is bigger and better!
I found the Nextbook Premium 9 to be lightweight and easy to fit in most spaces. Great to throw in your purse, briefcase, or suitcase. The Nextbook arrived installed with SlideMe Market, the application store of the Nextbook. It did not include the Android Market, instead I found instructions and was encouraged to download the Amazon App Store. Unfortunately the directions provided did not seem to be accurate and in order to download the Amazon App Store I turned to the internet for directions. I highly suggest if you do purchase the Nextbook Premium 9 you download the Amazon App Store, while the SlideMe Market is pre-installed, the applications are limited.
The Nextbook Premium 9 is equipped with a front facing camera. Though I have used a front facing camera on occasion for the most part I find a front facing camera ONLY a limited feature. If the front facing was in addition to a camera on the back of the Nextbook, then I would say it was a great additional feature. The other thing I was unable to do with this feature was to take a screenshot. I was hoping to be able to easily take screenshots for the purpose of this review. However after further research I found I was going to have to purchase an application in order to do create a screen capture. There were a some fun features of the camera I did like such as the ability to change the mode, quality, and color. The camera can also be switched over to video mode.
Through the Amazon App Store I was able to download a variety of games. Currently the majority of the games were downloaded by my six year old daughter. Yes even a six year old can download applications. Often when browsing applications I’ve noticed that there will be a featured FREE application for the day. This application is usually a paid version that they are offering to you free of charge for that day only. I love this because it makes me feel like I’m getting a steal, and encourages me to visit the store on a daily basis. It also means I can try out some apps I may not have otherwise thought about. I mean who doesn’t like free right?
The tablet is pretty easy to navigate with a menu bar docked on the home page to link you to the settings, your application page, e-reader, and help. You can also customize the front page with icons of your most used applications for easy access. In addition you can download wallpapers in the SlideMe Market. It did take me some time to learn how to change the wallpaper. I tried using the help but with a keyword of wallpaper or background it could not find an answer to my question. I was finally able to figure it out by selecting the menu button.
The Nextbook is mainly used by my daughter and son. I have given them free reign to download any free games that they wish and they can play with it when they would like. Due to this being the main use of the Nextbook I felt it was necessary to find a protective covering/case. When I searched for Nextbook 9 cases I was unable to find any at first. I finally found one at Best Buy for $29.99, however before I purchased it I decided to put the Nextbook into an iPad case that I previously had before I got my Otterbox and it fit pretty good. Though you may not be able to find a case specifically for the Nextbook 9 (they are working on changing this) any case for a 9″ tablet will work well. You can see the case below and it fits good and helps protect the Nextbook. I did not try to synch up the keyboard to the Nextbook to see if it would work. I’m primarily using it as a case.
One thing I would love to see changed is the sidebar of the Nextbook light up not when you touch it but as a default. I am often using tablets in the dark as I sit and watch TV. The sidebar doesn’t light up until you touch a button however I can’t seem to find the correct button until it lights up.
There are some advantages that the Nextbook Premium 9 has over the “other” tablet I currently own. One of those advantages is the ability to play Flash. I often find myself visiting a website that I’m unable to see a video because my current tablet doesn’t have this capability. It also has a SD card slot. This means you will never run out of storage for your Nextbook. You can always purchase an SD Card to move over items you won’t be using on a daily basis. The Nextbook Premium 9 is also preloaded with 25 free e-books. You will also find the Nexbtook 9 manual for easy reference in the e-Reader. I just told my son that I would purchase Hunger Games for him on the Nextbook and he can use it as his personal e-reader. (Note: I have not yet checked to see if that title is for purchase.)
I found both advantages and disadvantages to the Nextbook Premium 9. I hope that my review has given you an idea of what to expect. Depending on what you plan on using a tablet for this may be the tablet for you at the right price. I am finding that I enjoy having the tablet as a second option for my children. They often argue over who’s turn it is with my phone and current tablet. Having the Nextbook Premium 9 as an additional option cuts down on the disagreements.
