One thing that us Floridians usually have to do without is basements. It is one luxury up North that I miss most. The reason for no basements in Florida level has to do with the water in the ground they are just almost impossible to build. For this reason we use either our garage or a Florida self storage. However you even to definitely do your homework before you chose just any storage company. In Florida is usually better to have air conditioned storage space if you plan on keeping important items that may not deal well with the sticky humidity and heat.
I’m too cheap for a storage unit and am one of the Floridians that chose (though my husband hates it) to use our garage as storage space. It is amazing as you drive down a Florida neighborhood street how many cars are parked in the driveway instead of in the safe haven of the garage. Here is a photo of my garage, my husband did all the packing so he could at least fit his middle life crisis car in the garage.
When we lived in Michigan we had a basement and I loved it. You can keep all your Christmas and other items you pack away never to use again in one small corner out of the way. We had a small area set up with a TV and a ping pong table in which I tried my best to beat my stepfather which wasn’t very easy. However I was the only one to give him a run for his money that is for sure.
When my parents lived in Georgia they were working on renovating the basement. The great thing about the basement is it adds another whole level to your home. It would be a perfect addition to our home to lock allow my son in. He is taking guitar and I would love to give him a space where he can just rock out and enjoy himself. It would be a great place to move his room…..way far away from those nagging parents he complains about. I wish I knew who these extra set of parents are that he complains about.
Bottom line is one thing I dislike about Florida is not having a basement!

I would love to have some more storage space in my house! With all of the baby stuff and the kids’ old clothes, I feel like the walls are closing in. I desperately need to have a yard sale! Brian’s car was in the garage (my truck won’t fit even if it is clean) up until about a month ago when we got the new floor and moved all of the power wheels and other large items out there…now it sits out in the driveway with my truck.

Yes we have the same thing in California, no basements can not understand why guess it is just the rush to build houses as cheap as possible. I grew up in New England and miss having the basement.

We never knew anyone with a basement when I was growing up in Louisiana. When we moved to Georgia, I realized lots of people in Georgia have basements. I love basements. I think it is funny that my family has a distrust of people with basements. They have never known anyone to have a basement and only hear about basements on the news and Law and Order when someone is being kept in the basement.
Speaking of spooky basements, I love your Halloween themed website! Very Cool!

Ahhhh to trade a basement for a sandy beach for me would be lovely 🙂 I am in Iowa and nearly everyone I know either has a full or partial basement. For you Southern folk, a basement serves alot of purposes- main purpose is because we get tornadoes and going to the lowest level is really the only place that might be safe.
We live in a very old house (circa 1900) and our basement has the limestone walls and originally had a dirt floor which was later poured over with cement. The scariest part about basements I think is really where you have them there is usually a higher incidence of radon gas. Luckily in an older house it isn’t an issue, but in the new airtight homes, they have to keep radon detectors around.
Basements are alright for storage for sure, the other part about older homes is they forget to build closets / storage spaces 🙂

We don’t have basements in Las Vegas either – I don’t like it one bit!! What I wouldn’t give for a basement! A finished one!

I never thought about not having a basement due to the level of water in the ground. It is so useful to have a basement that I wouldn’t like not having one. I live in a neighborhood that has homes with 3-4 car garages and they still can’t pull into the garage. LOL
