It is that time of the year. A time when you are looking for that special gift for a loved one. You are probably thinking about the gift and not thinking about some of the dangers that can be lurking around you as you swipe that credit card or throw out that receipt.
Thankfully I have never had a problem with identity theft however we have had to close down an account due to fraudulent activity on a card. Sometimes just being careful isn’t enough. One of the ways to protect yourself is purchasing a LifeLock membership. This membership will help make many of your transactions a little more secure and alert you of suspicious activity.
Here are some tips when shopping online:
Know who you are buying from. If you haven’t shopped at the retailer before, research it online to see what other customers are saying. Or call the customer service number to ask about their policies and guarantees. If I don’t know the company I won’t buy for free it is a scammer in disguise.
Warning messages: Don’t dismiss the warnings your computer may sometimes flash when you visit a site. We may want to think it is nothing but the warning was prompted for a reason.
Visit sites through your browser not through email: Scammers know you will think nothing of receiving an email from a respected retailer about your order. The email can be disguised as needing information regarding your recently placed order. Do not click on any links in the email. Instead log into your account via your web browser and see if there is anything requested there.
Shop Smart: Online shopping provides many conveniences, but be sure to look for a security seal and https in the URL when it comes time to enter any personal information. This quick check can help stop you from being phished and disclosing your identity on a counterfeit website.
