With three kids I admit getting it hasn’t always been easy getting them to read. Well, to be honest it is the boys that I’ve struggled with. In fact my oldest son was behind in reading and I had to take a very proactive approach and spent night after night with him until he finally was at grade level. Now he does read on occasion for enjoyment if he can find a good series of books he likes.
My daughter checks out books left and right at the library and takes pride in her accomplishment of finishing a book. My youngest son has always been a struggle. This is one reason we enjoy having a subscription to Sports Illustrated Kids in the house. He has always been a huge sports fan, and the key to making reading interesting is to find something your children are interested in.
With the winter break coming upon us soon my son will no longer be staying after school to enjoy his recreation football so we need to get creative at home to get in some exercise and stay active. We have a badminton net in our backyard that we love to enjoy as a family. Sometimes my husband will get outside with the boys and play a little basketball. Of course there is always football, what boy doesn’t love to throw the football with their dad. Excuse me, and what girl either.
Sports has always been such a large part of our lives. My husband, like so many men, is a HUGE football fan. He counts down the days until the season starts. He does the fantasy football thing and losing a game can really mess with his mood. It is so nice to see my children enjoying sports as well. Over the years I have been a soccer mom, baseball mom, and even a football mom for a season.

We are a family full of sports fanatics so SI Kids would make an amazing gift idea. I would probably sneak off to read the issues myself as well!

What a great affordable gift. Yes the kids would enjoy reading about sports. Anything to get them a further prepared for school, in a fun way. If it’s not fun, they won’t do it!
