Getting my children to help me review something in detail is sometimes like trying to put a square peg into a round hole.
Mom: “Honey did you like the Strawberry Shortcake Movie?”
Honey: “Yes”
Mom: “What was it about?”
Honey: “I don’t know.”
Mom: “What did you like about it?”
Honey: “I don’t know.”
“I don’t know” is really just code for “I can’t be bothered”. So I agreed to watch it with her. The 68 minute DVD consists of small episodes, it is not a full length feature film, which actually is much better for young children. I watched the first two episodes with Honey and was definitely impressed.
I remember Strawberry Shortcake as a child, more so the toys then anything else and always loved the sweet smelling dolls. What I loved most about the DVD was the graphics were colorful and cute, and that each episode taught a valuable lesson. It is hard to find cartoons now a days that teach rather then strictly entertain.
The first episode taught the girls that having machines do things for you isn’t always the best choice. Lemon Meringue purchases a cool do-it-all machine for her salon and finds out that her customers are in and out so fast that she misses the times when they chatted and laughed.
The second episode taught the girls about rules and how they are important. Plum Puddin‘ doesn’t follow the rules regarding booking Strawberry Shortcake’s cafe for her recital and soon finds out that she has sent out invitations with a date of which was previously booked. Plum goes through a learning process in the episode and comes to realize why following rules is important.
