I’m speaking about Apple and the folks at their Genius Bar, and I’m speaking about my laptop. A couple weeks ago the kids were playing on my laptop and told me it kept freezing. I assumed it wasn’t the laptop but the game their were playing (Minecraft). That was until I was using it one day and all of a sudden it froze. My screen filed up with a black and white checkerboard. I turned it off and rebooted and it seemed to work ok until I shut it down. The next day the same thing happened however this time when I rebooted the pixels remained on the screen.
So I went ahead and took it down to the Geek Squad to have them take a look. However after explaining what the problem was and showing them they said it was a hardware issue and Geek Squad covers software. My best bet was to take it to Apple and have them look at it, though they did surmise that it was the logic board that needed replacing. They said depending on the age of my computer it may be able to be a part that can be replaced or it may be built right in.
I made an appointment for the Genius Bar for the following weekend (first thing in the AM I hate waiting around that store). The Apple employee booted it up, ran a few test, and agreed it was my logic board. However I was told it was TOO OLD to be replaced. Meaning they no longer make or could order the parts for it. SIGH. We had a good run. I purchased it I think a year or a little over a year ago off of EBay and it was a 2006. I bought it for $700 and I would say I got my use out of it.
I was bummed to have lost it. We use the laptop often. If one of us is on the main computer the other one (usually me or hubby) will grab the laptop. As I was moping around my husband said if you really want another one you should just buy one. That was all I needed to hear. I knew I couldn’t replace my 17″ with a new 17″ they are just way to expensive so I had to decide “did size matter” ;). I decided it did not. Turns out that very day, Sunday, February 2nd, was the last day that Best Buy had a 13″ MacBook Pro on sale. Marked down from $1199 to $1049. In addition I had a $125 gift card. So I got rid of the dinosaur and brought home a new baby…..
I thought it was going to bother me switching from a 17″ to a 13″ but I actually think I like the smaller laptop better. It is much lighter and more portable. Also while at the store I was really admiring the new laptops with the Retina display. They are so crisp, clean, and colorful but they are so much more expensive and don’t even come with a CD drive. So I went with the basic MacBook Pro and and very happy.
Note: If you are wondering WHY I’ve chosen a Lion for the desktop there is a significance. If you know me personally (and know me from over 15 years ago) you know that my maiden name is “Lyons” LOL!
