When I think of VTech usually what comes to mind is toys, maybe that is from purchasing many VTech toys when my children were young. However recently I was introduced to Vtech Phones. In fact last year I did a review for the VTech Connect to Cell DS6421-3. When we moved into our house three years ago we decided NOT to get a landline. With all four of us (Honey doesn’t have a phone yet) with cell phones it just seemed the extra $50 a month was not worth it.
One drawback with cell phones is hearing them. Our house is pretty wide spread and if my cell phone is in my bedroom I won’t hear it in the living room. Must of the time my phone is on vibrate from work and I often forget to change it. It is near impossible to hear a phone when it is on vibrate. My family always complains that I never answer and I’m hard to get a hold of. So when I had the chance to review the VTech Connect to Cell I was pretty excited.
The reason I was excited is the way the Connect to Cell works is through Bluetooth your cell phone is connected to the hand unit. As long as your phone is within Bluetooth distance and someone calls you not only will your cell phone ring but the handheld unit will ring like a land line. This is perfect for us! So if I get home from work and my phone is on vibrate in my purse and a family member calls me the Connect to Cell will ring throughout the house. The model we received last year also came with two additional receivers which means I could have the base unit in the kitchen and a receiver in my room and one in my living room.
My biggest issue with the VTech Connect to Cell Ds6432-3 was you can only connect two cell phones at a time. This was not exactly the perfect situation. My husband didn’t care whether his phone was hooked up or not. I really wanted mine hooked up (due to the problem above) but I also wanted both of my boys phone hooked up so if I called them and THEIR phone was on vibrate the same thing would happen. However there was no way to get around the “only two” cell phones being able to connect.
When I was asked to review the upgraded VTech Connect to Cell DS6521-2 I thought this may be the solution to our problem. Indeed it was! We now use TWO VTech Connect to Cell systems. This new one now sits by my computer with the additional receiver in my bedroom. Any time this unit rings we know it is my phone. The other system resides in the kitchen and each boy has a receiver in their room. This makes it much easier to know who is getting a call.
I do like the looks of this unit over the other which is unusual because I usually prefer black to silver. This unit is sturdier and feels better in your hands. Definitely a better quality phone regarding the material and weight. The sound quality is a little better then the DS6421-3 but unfortunately this is one of the issues with the connect to cell when using it connected to your cell. You just don’t get the same quality of a call as you do on a cell phone. I think the quality issue is only on the receiving end because those on the other end have never complained and say they can hear me just fine.
The Connect to Cell does transfer over your phone directory from your cell to the hand unit. When you receive a call you have the option of letting the phone speak who is calling. This is nice if I’m not near it and want to hear the name and number to decide if I really want to answer. This is similar to the special ringtones I have for the connects on my cell phone. We have had no problem with dead spots in our house at all. I also have not had the chance to use the call waiting or speakerphone.
When you make a phone call out you have the option of using your land line (if you have one) or selecting a cell phone that is connected. That means if I’m sitting here at my desk working and need to make a call instead of getting up phone out of my bedroom I can just pick up my Connect To Cell and place a call through my cell phone line. The caller on the other end will see the incoming call from my cell phone and it will go against my cell phone minutes.
I do suggest you keep your manual because I had a hard time trying to figure out HOW to make a call from the hand unit. It is actually pretty easy but without the manual I was clueless. There are some added features on this phone that are kind of cool like being able to change the ring tone for different cell phones. One setting I do use is the transfer setting. I may be sitting here at my computer and answer a call but then for sound quality or maybe I’m getting ready to leave I can transfer the call over to my cell phone with the click of a button. The person on the other ends knows no difference.
Overall for our purposes I enjoy my VTech Connect to Cell Ds6432-3 and previous model. It does for me what I need it to do which is alert me to a call. I think if you also have a land line connected to the sound quality would be much better. This is just an assumption of course as I have not tested it on a land line. I also have not test the answering machine portion of the phone.
